Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom officially reopens on May 3, 2026

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the beloved “wildest ride in the wilderness” at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, is set to make a triumphant return following an extensive 15-month refurbishment.  This classic coaster is poised to deliver its signature thrills with fresh polish and a bit of added Disney magic.

Disney has implemented several major improvements:

  • Lowered Height Requirement: The minimum height has dropped from 40 inches to 38 inches. This change, made possible by the updated ride vehicles and safety reviews, allows younger preschoolers to ride for the first time.
  • Rainbow Caverns Scene: A brand-new scene featuring phosphorescent pools and shimmering stalactites, inspired by the classic Disneyland Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland .
  • New Track & Trains: The entire roller coaster track was replaced to ensure a significantly smoother ride experience . The passenger trains have also been refreshed with updated vehicles and restraints
  • Enhanced Storytelling: New lighting, audio effects, and the restoration of several long-dormant special effects further develop the legend of mining tycoon Barnabas T. Bullion and the "menacing rumble" of the mountain .
  • Lightning Lane Status: It has returned to the Lightning Lane Multi Pass lineup as a Tier 1 attraction .
